Welcome to The Strategy Journal

Casting my memory back to the year I graduated, I felt anxious that my student-hood was coming to an end. Especially for someone who’d studied English and Film (I’m sure many humanities students can relate here), it seemed that my future prospects weren’t as clear cut as my friends who’d gone down the STEM route. They’d secured graduate jobs, that too in sectors I could never see myself in, and I was gingerly trying to keep my cool as my mental was falling apart little by little.

I knew I wanted to create things, and I knew I liked dealing with concepts and ideas, but what should I do? “Maybe I’ll do something in…marketing,” I thought. Yes, that super broad area of advertising that everyone in my lectures seems to refer to, that sounds vaguely creative. OK, well great, now what? Now let me search for a job. Copywriter; what does that mean? Account Executive; nope, I didn’t study accounting, how did that get through my preferences? Analyst; what am I analysing here, LinkedIn Job Board? Nothing seemed to make sense, and I had no one who could explain it to me. All the jargon, the terminology, the required 4 years of experience before a company would even consider me - it felt hopeless, deject. It all seemed so….inaccessible.

I’ve learnt a lot since then and I’ve decided that it doesn’t need to be that way. This gatekeeper culture, let’s kill it. The Strategy Journal is a resource where aspiring creatives can learn from the most unique and experienced voices in the industry. You can regularly read a brand new interview from creatives who play a part in making powerful and stylised work, getting an insight into their personality to show how it is just as important (if not more so) than the credentials we’re told are so vital to our future. A lot of people are struggling to find their feet in an already super competitive industry, and I hope that these conversations will clear some of the smog that seems so present in our career paths.
